Jason & Emily Schott

We settled in beautiful Colorado in 2018 after 25 years of moving around the continent while Jason served in the military. We designed the house ourselves and chose Monument Colorado as the location of our dream “forever” home after considering where in the entire world we wanted to grow roots into our local community.

Jason grew up in a small farming community in North Dakota and after attending the Air Force Academy for college was a fighter pilot and experimental test pilot for the Air Force, but has hung up his “pilot wings” and is now a leader at our local church (a video link of him speaking is below if you’re really curious).

Emily grew up in Iowa and is also proud of her rural roots. She has always been very active in our local church and counseled at-risk teen mothers for a time. But her primary “profession” was as a stay-at-home mom who home-schooled two amazing kids.  Our daughter and son (and our daughter-in-law!) are now living their young adult lives and thriving.

We designed the house ourselves in 2015 from a blank piece of paper with no architectural training or experience. It was an exercise in hope, since Emily was undergoing cancer treatment at that time for stage 3 breast cancer. We chose to believe she would make it through — and she has! We decided to make building a new and unique home as adventurous as possible, so we moved into an RV on the raw piece of land here and lived very basically for two years (hard and cold Colorado mountain winters!) while the long process of permits, excavations, and construction proceeded. Jason fell from the newly framed roof in January 2020, and he didn’t walk for almost six months while the house went from framed sticks to the gorgeous home it is today.

So both of us have had recent life-altering experiences that give us an appreciation for life and sharing it with people.  We didn’t originally plan to host a vacation rental in our home, but it just “happened” and we are so excited to share our piece of Colorado with guests like you from around the country.

We’ve named the suite “The Fly-By” because our property is situated along the path that military jets take when they fly low-altitude across the Air Force Academy located a just couple miles to our South. Several times per week we enjoy the “sound of freedom” crossing over us with up-close views of our nation’s phenomenal air-power. Related to that, part of your first impression will be wondering about the neighbor’s huge “egg beater” (looks like a giant whisk). We’ll be happy to share the local lore on it.

We are excited to share this special getaway with you. We truly hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

You belong here too!
